EMAS is the abbreviation for Eco-Management and Audit Scheme and is a seal of quality of the European Union for an exacting environmental management system.
It is a voluntary instrument of the EU and the requirements are higher than those of the standard environmental management certificate - DIN ISO 14001. Companies that align themselves with the EMAS scheme continuously improve their environmental performance and report this annually in the EMAS environmental declarations. In addition, an independent environmental assessor also monitors implementation of the EMAS regulation and observance of all environmental regulations (legal compliance).
